Ms. Batease's First Grade
May 28, 2010
Dear
families,
I have to say that I am very proud of
my first graders for continuing to work hard through such a very hot week at
school! We wrapped up our weather and
climate unit this week with a fun Jeopardy-style review on Friday. We also shared the dioramas we created in
class depicting the habitat our animals live in and what the climate is like there.
On Thursday afternoon Miss Vermont visited with the
Kindergarten, first, fifth and sixth graders.
She explained some of her duties as Miss Vermont and got the students brainstorming
ways to be involved in their communities through community service and sharing
their talents with others. She explained
the importance of being a good role model and how students can set and obtain
goals for themselves.
I hope that everyone has a safe and
happy Memorial Day weekend! I will see you all on Tuesday!
~Ms. Julie

The Week
in Review
Math: This week has been a review of many of the math skills we have
been working on throughout the school year.
We focused on telling time, counting coins, and calculating how much
more and how much less than. On Thursday
and Friday the students took their Unit 10 assessment, which reviews many of
the skills learned throughout the school year.
Literacy: This week we have been focusing on vowel teams, reading
comprehension and summarizing. We read
“Eek! There’s a Mouse in the House,” and “The Red Eyed Tree Frog” from our
reading anthologies. We have been
focusing on summarizing the important events of these stories, and making
predictions about what will happen next as we are reading them.
Religion: This week we practiced our Mass readings each day and we have
been continuing to say a decade of the Rosary each day during our religion
time. The first graders read at Mass on
Friday morning for the last time this year!
They did a wonderful job and have come so far with their reading
skills! When I passed out the readings
last week every student could read most of, if not all, of their readings (Some
of them contain very challenging words).
Spelling: This week’s spelling list consisted words containing the
diagraphs “ch,” “sh,” “th,” and “wh.”
Science: This week we wrapped up our weather and climate unit by sharing
our dioramas depicting our animals’ habitats.
We also played a fun review game, similar to Jeopardy, testing the
knowledge and vocabulary we have learned over the past few weeks.
